I just realized I’ve never recommended a Jamie Loftus podcast! This is a general Jamie Loftus endorsement; she has approximately one million podcasts, but “Ghost Church” is my personal fave. Jamie is a phenomenal researcher and a comedian at the same time, which makes for pretty amazing podcasting. She’s also a deeply thoughtful and compassionate person, and I think she always handles her subject matter really well (she has another podcast on Lolita that is handled with so much care). But “Ghost Church” is about American Spiritualism, and it digs into its fascinating history as well as its existence as a modern religion, and Jamie’s own little personal narrative/experience. Really fascinating, and it has a great theme song. I’d read a bit about Lily Dale in my supernatural folklore class (don’t even get me started on my supernatural folklore class), and I’d heard about the Fox sisters, but mostly this was totally new to me. Listened to a lot of it in the cemetery, bc obviously.
