I don’t mean to imply you can’t have rich and fulfilling friendships when you’re in a romantic relationship, but I do think there’s something to be said for having your friendships take center stage for a while. I think spending so much time single has really let me see platonic relationships as extremely valuable and just as legitimate as romantic ones. My friend and I were at lunch the other day and this older woman saw us and told us that her friendships were the most important part of her life and that she was so glad we had each other. It was so sweet. I always think about my mom, and how much she really dug into her friendships during the worst years after she and my dad got divorced. I don’t ever want one relationship to eclipse all the other ones in my life, and spending time single has let me really lay those foundations I guess? I really believe that you don’t have to get everything from one person. Idk there’s so much I like about being single (feeling of belonging just to yourself, alone time, getting to pretend you’re in Sex and the City), but I do think that’s the biggest one for me.
